Cathlean Wells Utzig, Planning & Finance

Background:

Grew up UU in Atlanta, GA. For the last 18 years, I have lived in Charlotte, NC. I haven an undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt in Math and Psychology and a Masters of Tax from Georgia State University. I worked as a tax accountant in Atlanta from 1988-1993 and then took a 14 year "maternity leave" after we moved to Charlotte, NC. During that time, in addition to raising two daughters, I volunteered for numerous organizations from girl scouts, children's theater, kids' schools, and my church (Unitarian Universalist Church of Charlotte). I am now back at work as a tax accountant with Dixon Hughes Goodman and really enjoying my career the second time around.

What attracted you to The Mountain?

My daughters have both had very positive experiences at youth CONs at The Mountain and I love the area where it is located, having grown up camping throughout the entire southeastern Appalachian Mountains.

In addition, my parents were among the group of first contributors to The Mountain so I would like to help further something they felt strongly about supporting.

What would you like to accomplish in your Board role?

Help the organization achieve fiscal sustainability.

About your family:

Partner in life (for 27 years, so far) is Carter Utzig. We have two daughters, Meghann and Anna. Meghann is a sophomore at University of Mississippi and Anna is a senior in high school at Myers Park High School. She will be joining her sister at Ole Miss in fall of 2011. 

What do you find most important in life?

To help others - whether that is family, friends, clients or others. I get great satisfaction by knowing that I have made somthing better for someone else. It is my way of making the world a better place.
