July Message from The Mountain

Rhododendron

June was a wonderful month here at The Mountain.  Nature Glory at its best, with the rhododendron in full bloom and the excitement of our campers filling The Mountain with energy and enthusiasm!

So many wonderful things – offsite as well as on!  The General Assembly of Unitarian Universalists was convened this year in Charlotte, NC and The Mountain was well represented among the 4,000 plus in attendance.  Magically created by staff member Laura Elliott, our booth was a warm and welcoming rendition of a Mountain cabin.  So many friends old and new came by to see us and have a chat on the ‘porch’.   All of the Trustees, volunteers and staff present were thrilled by the positive comments, kind words and bright expressions of hope for The Mountain's future.

Up on top, we are enjoying a very exciting summer.  In June we had MountainCamp Counselors, CIT 2.0 and Ascender Training in addition to Junior High MountainCamp.   The Mountain also welcomed Performing Artists Retreat, Columbus UU Retreat, the Mid South Presidents Convocation, Eastwood Family Reunion, Accelerated Awakenings, Habitat Americorps Retreat and UUs for a Just Economic Community with Dr. Dan Carter.

Wow!  And that’s just June!  This month we have Elementary and Beginning Camp, along with Service and Adventure, and will finish up with Senior High MountainCamp.  Joining us in July as well are Native Voices, the Wheeler Birthday Party, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and Religious Education Week.

We have heard so many stories and have received letters as well as many notes on our evaluations in support of the work The Mountain Community is doing.  We hope you will share your stories with us too.  Please follow us on Facebook and add your own special words to the ever growing narrative!  Be sure to look at the rest of our website for all the latest.

One of our favorite commentaries this year came from a seventh grade camper, and we believe that in many ways it sums up so much of what MountainCamp continues to be after 32 years as a UU values based summer experience!

“It is important that I attend MountainCamp because over the years I have made close friends that I hold dear to my heart.  I also have been introduced to different people with different ideas.  I love seeing my friends and being able to stay close to them when we are not at camp.  However, I understand how important it is to strengthen my skills when I deal with someone I don’t agree with or don’t have much in common with.  By learning the differences in people I would like to gain the skills to be non-judgmental.  I think The Mountain supports diversity and hope we gain that skill.”
